 We operate from Lagos marina in Western Algarve. This is the unspoilt part of the area within easy reach of the stunning cliffs of Cape St. Vincent at the South West corner of Portugal.
Getting to Lagos Marina is quite simple. There are some very good value flights to Faro airport. You have to take a short taxi ride to Faro train station and then take the train which delivers you right into the marina.
You stay on board and you are welcome to stay on our Beneteau Oceanis 350 “Soilse” the nights either end of the course.
During the courses we will call into various ports along this beautiful coastline. The Algarve is possibly the best sailing venue in Europe. The weather is often excellent even in the Winter and for much of the year there is a good North wind which means you have a great sailing wind but not too much sea as the winds are offshore and it is a tidal Atlantic coast. |
COMPETENT CREW - This is the first level in the Yachtmaster Cruising Scheme's practical training. At the end of the course, the student should be a useful crew member, able to take watch and understand basic boat handling. Duration: 5 days.
DAY SKIPPER - This course is designed to introduce the student to skippering. At the end of the course, the student should be able to safely skipper a yacht on local passages by day, and be able to come home after dark. Duration: 5 days.
COASTAL SKIPPER - This course includes more advanced skippering. Longer passages will be undertaken, and there will be more night work. Duration: 5 days.
YACHTMASTER EXAM PREPARATION - The student is expected to be Coastal Skipper standard, have a Shorebased Yachtmaster Certificate, a VHF Operator's Certificate, a Sea Survival Certificate, and a current First Aid Certificate. The student should have logged at least 2,500 sea miles including certain other criteria. Duration: As required - depending on student's experience.
OCEAN YACHTMASTER QUALIFYING PASSAGE - Students who hold a Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence and a Shorebased Ocean Yachtmaster Certificate may undertake a qualifying passage with us, during which they can prepare their submission for the oral examination for Ocean Yachtmaster.
OWN BOAT EXAM PREPARATION - We will train you, in your own power or sailing boat, in preparation for Yachtmaster Offshore or Coastal Skipper examinations.
YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE AND COASTAL SKIPPER EXAMS - We can arrange exams for you. John Roberts is an RYA and an ISA Yachtmaster examiner in all disciplines (sail, motor and ocean)
